KA1 - Ecosystems Flashcards
Definition of Biodiversity
The variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem
Definition of Habitat
The area where an organism (or group of organisms) live
Definition of Community
All of the organisms (plants and animals) living in a habitat
Definition of Population
The total number of one species of plant or animal in a habitat
Definition of Species
Organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring
Definition of Ecosystem
All the organisms (the community) living in a particular habitat and the non-living components with which the organisms interact
Definition of Producer
Plants that use light from the sun to produce their own food by photosynthesis
Definition of Consumer
Any organism that doesn’t make its own food via photosynthesis and must therefore eat other organisms
Definition of Herbivore
Eats plant material only
Definition of Carnivore
Eats animal material only
Definition of Omnivore
Eats both plant and animal material
Wide variety of species
= High Biodiversity
Small variety of species
= Low Biodiversity
Is an ecosystem more stable with a high biodiversity or a low one? Why?
Ecosystems are more stable with higher ecosystems due to the variety of food sources and materials
Ways that the human population are (negatively) affecting biodiversity
- Overfishing
- Pollution
- Deforestation
