K.A-7 Skin Care Flashcards
What are the pros and cons of UV light
Cons
Cause skin cancer, sunburn, eye damage
Pros
Necessary for the production of vit D
How do free radicals form
UV light breaks covalent bonds to form free radicals
UV light has higher energy levels so it overcomes the electrostatic attraction
What is a result to UV light breaking covalent bonds
Homolytic fission where each atom leaves with 1 electron from the covalent bonds
What has enough energy to break covalent bonds
UV light
What are free radicals
Broken covalent bonds which are highly reactive as they have unpaired electrons
What are the 3 stages to produce a new molecule with free radicals
Initiation
Propagation
Termination
Explain the initiation stage
The UV light breaks a covalent bind to from 2 free radicals
Explain the propagation stage
The highly reactive free radicals react with another molecule to break it apart and binds with one of the atoms
Explain the termination stage
The free radicals can react with other free radicals to form molecules. Once all the free radicals become stable the reaction is over
What is a free radical scavenger
Compounds that combine with free radicals to make them stable
What are examples of free radical scavengers
Vitamin C and D
