Ka 2 Flashcards
What is mass
A mensure of the quantity of matter in an object
What is weight
Gravitational force on an object that has mass
Define gravitational field strength
Gravitational force per unit mass
Equation is g = w/m (gravitational force = weight divided by mass
What is gravitational force near the earth
9.9 N/kg
Define density
Mass per unit volume
Equation = density = m/V (mass/ volume = density)
How do you determine the density of a liquid?
Mass of the liquid divided by its volume
How do you find the density of a regular shape
Weigh the object, and measure the volume. Divide the mass by the volume
How do you find the density of an irregular shaped object
Weigh it, put it in water and see how much the water volume has changed. Divide the mass by the volume
What changes may force produce
Size, shape and motion
What is the resultant of two or more forces acting along the same straight line
The forces cancel eachother out until there is one force remaining
Describe friction
Force between two surfaces that may impede relative motion and produce heat. Friction can act on an object moving through a liquid and gas
What happens to an object unless there is a resultant force on the object
It either remains at rest or continues in a straight line at constant speed
What is a resultant force
An opposing force
What goes in the same direction as the resulting forces
Acceleration
Equation for force
F = m x a
Define force
Push or pull on an object that attempts to change its motion, shape or size
Define inertia
Capacity of an object to resist a change in motion from a force, it is related to its mass
What is a free body diagram
Shows all the forces acting on an object and the object reperesented as a point
Define acceleration
Rate of change of velocity
