K & W 18 pp 502-507 Flashcards
Emotional Memory
trigger rapid fight or light response (amygdala close connections with medial temporal cortical structures)
Short Term Memory
AKA Working Memory or Temporal Memory a neural record of the recent events in their order. Short term memory systems hold sensory events, movements, and cognitive information such as the digits, words, names, or other items, for a brief period of time
Left-Posterior-Temporal Lesion
can result in an almost total inability to repeat verbal stimuli such as digits, letters, words and sentences. Example patient K.F.
Short term memory and frontal lobes
Damage to the frontal cortex is the recognized cause of many short-term memory impairment for tasks in which subjects must temporarily remember the location of the stimuli.
Proactive Interference
When earlier information interferes with learning new information
prefrontal areas take part in different types of short term memory
- Short term memory for object to location in space mediated by the dorsal stream.
- The dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex areas, 9 and 46 participate in short-term memory for visual object recognition (ventral stream) and receive information from the inferior temporal cortex.
- Area 8 searches for an object when a stimulus is presented, and areas nine and 46 remember objects identified in sequence.
Transient global amnesia
Described as a loss of old memories and inability to form new ones, the condition is acute, with a sudden onset and usually a short course. Can be a one time event
diseases that impair memory
Herpes simplex, Alzheimer’s and Korasoff’s syndrome
