What is juvenile idiopathic arthritis?
Arthritic syndromes in someone less than 16yrs old. its an autoimmune condition with lots of different subtypes.
What is needed for the diagnosis of JIA?
Person <16yrs
symptoms >6 weeks
What screening should be done in all patients?
Eye screening - blindness is a complication of all subtypes of JIA. (Uveitis).
What is the treatment of JIA?
Usually similar to the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
What are the types of JIA?
- oligoarticular/pauciarticular
- polyarticular
- systemic onset (stills disease)
- enthesitis
- psoriatic
What is oligoarticular/pauciarticular JIA?
JIA of less than 4 joints
most common
Can have type 1, 2 or 3
it usually affects only one joint and tends to be the larger joints.
What is polyarticular JIA?
JIA of >5 joints - it can be RF positive or RF negative. it usually affects the smaller joints and is symmetrical.
What is systemic onset JIA (stills disease)?
An autoimmune disorder with inflammation, salmon coloured rash and spiking fever (can be with or without joint problems).
What is the treatment?
NSAIDs
steroids
DMARDs - methotrexate, sulfasalazine, leflunomide
AntiTNH - infliximab, adalinumab
