- Portia comprehends mercy on the basis of how the Christian elizabethan audience would have understood the difference between old and new testament. In Old, god diplays justice on those who do not keep in line, but in new, god is merciful and offers salvation

Shylock cannot ‘deny the course of law’ - pointing out the hypocrisy of the Venetian audience who want to deny him justice. A powerful metaphor of nature, imaging justice as a river that cannot be stopped.

portia - she is the symbol of justice all the way through. this quotation shows a lack of prejudice
