jury descion making Flashcards
describe the halo effect
the more attractive you are, the more likely you are to be found not guilty and if found guilty you will be treated better. the halo effect is most common during no fatal crimes. it is stronger for attractive women then men
how does gender effect jury decision making
women are less likely to be found guilty then men and are more believable. largely due to social stereotypes that women as weaker, less capable and motherly so they pose less of a risk to society. however a violation of a gender role can change the verdict of the jury.
how does race effect jury decision making
if you are of the minority race you are more likely to be judged harsher then the majority due to in-group out group dynamic that leads to discrimination and prejudice. it is also influenced by the type of crime ie if its surrounding race and social class. there is a stereotyped view that black men are more likely to commit crime. there is a higher population in the UK of ethnic minorities in prison of 15% compared to 8%.
give research to support the halo effect
obstrove and sigall, ppts were asked rate the attractiveness and give a sentence of the crime 1-15 years. in the attractive condition ppts gave a longer fraud sentence then burglary sentence.
