Jung Flashcards
Jung was a
Psychologist who had a reductive approach to religion
What is reductive?
Religion can be explained away
Not an illusion but
A reality of the unconscious mind
Possible to make some kind of
Spiritual connection through the mind
What is psychological maturity
Gives us a healthy mind and allows us to come to terms with who we are- individuation
Why didn’t Jung like freuds theory?
Didn’t like the sexual element or the view that religion was negative, he describes Freud as dogmatically and irrational
Why did Jung become interested in the supernatural?
Due to meeting his cousin, who entered these trance like states and started talking different accents and foreign languages. Jung believed his cousin was possessed by the evil spirit
What are the 2 parts of the unconscious mind
The collective unconscious and the personal unconscious
What is the personal unconscious?
Parts that wants to be kept hidden, it is inborn so not deprived from personal experience
Collective unconscious
Not individual but universal. He believed that a huge stock of material is shared in the collective unconscious. He said it contained images that all humans could recognise within themselves. He called these archetypes
What are archetypes?
Image generators which we are all born with and what forms our personality
What does prior knowledge mean?
Known through experience
Ideally the archetypes should be…
Balanced
If one is not dominant…
A person could suffer from neurosis
How do you achieve psychological health?
You need to become aware of all the archetypes and move them from the unconscious mind to the conscious mind
