What is his relationship with feud?
Corresponded with Freud over concept of psychoanalysis
Thought Freud over emphasised on sexual desires
How did jung understand religion?
A response to deep psychological layers common to all humanity
What is the unconscious (ego)?
Part of ind directly accessible to us = aware of it
What is the personal unconscious?
Unconscious layer personal to individual = repressed memories trauma - social conditioning
What is the collective unconscious ?
Deepest or most extensive layer of the psyche - shared by all humanity
Who inspired collective unconscious?
Kant- we classify tings in terms of shape colour etc
Jung thought the CU had similar functions = ARCHETYPES - make sense of our experiences
What are archetypes?
Forms or images that we use to understand the world
Similar to platos forms
What is the persona?
Pretend personality, the role society wants us to play - everyone does this
What is the shadow?
Side of personality we would rather kept hidden
EG dr Jekyll and mr Hyde
What is the anima/animus?
Characteristics of opposite sex - feminine side of men
People are attracted to those who reflect own anima/animus
What is the self?
Represented in images of royalty and leading religious figures - mandala, lotus, rose
What do archetypes present?
Potential; mental health problems if one becomes too dominant
What is individuation?
Every person has potential for wholeness, despite conflict between conscious and unconscious
What did Jung think everyone had ?
Instinct which seeks to unify different elements into coherent whole =INDIVIDUATION
