Basic function of all carbohydrates.
To supply the body with energy.
Examples of starchy carbs
Potato, bread, rice, pasta, couscous
Examples of sugary carbs
Chocolate, fizzy drinks, ice cream, biscuits, sweets
What happens when you have to many carbohydrates?
Excess calories stored as body fat = obesity
What happens when you have too much sugar?
Tooth decay, obesity
What does fibre prevent?
Constipation, bowel cancer, diverticulitis. It absorbs water, swells and provides bulk to help move food through the body.
How much fibre should you have per day?
30g
Functions of calcium
- To form strong bones and teeth in adolescents and children.
- To maintain strong bones and teeth in adults.
Dairy based sources of calcium
Milk, yoghurt, cheese.
Non dairy based sources of calcium
Lentils, soya milk, tinned fish
Portion sizes
Milk = 200ml/glass Yoghurt = 150g/pot Cheese = 30g
What is Vit D also known as?
Sunshine vitamin
Sources of Vit D
Oily fish, egg, cheese
How if Vit D formed?
Sunlight (UV light) hits our skin it causes a chemical reaction beneath the surface of the skin which helps the body to make its own Vitamin D
Functions of Vitamin D
- Allows body to absorb and use calcium
