What is a pun?
Making a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word (a play on words).
What is a soliloquy?
Long speech made by one character in a play. No other characters on stage. Meant to reveal the character’s thoughts to the audience.
What is an aside?
Short remark by a character. Unheard by other characters. Meant to reveal the character’s thoughts/feelings to the audience.
What is dramatic irony?
A type of irony in which the audience or reader knows something that the characters do not, resulting in increased tension (when the audience is aware about something about the character but the character is unaware of it).
What is verbal irony?
A type of irony where a person says one thing but means the opposite, expressing humour, frustration, or anger.
What is symbolism?
An artistic and poetic movement or style using symbolic images and indirect suggestion to express mystical ideas, emotions, and states of mind.
What is hyperbole?
Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
What is an allusion?
An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference. In literature, alluding to another text (like another book or character) that isn’t necessarily from the same text.
What is a metaphor?
A metaphor is a figure of speech that, for rhetorical effect, directly refers to one thing by mentioning another. It may provide clarity or identify hidden similarities between two different ideas.
What is a tragic hero?
The central character of a play, film, etc., depicted as a noble figure who experiences a tragic downfall.
What is pathetic fallacy?
The attribution of human feelings and responses to inanimate things or animals, especially in art and literature.
