How does Juliet change throughout the play ?

A

START - obedient and mature

MIDDLE/END - she becomes more immature and rebellious the more the play progresses.

Her and Romeo become more isolated , that’s what true love does to you.

ANALYSIS: status and wealth , all about the dutiful love for their family , not about true love and happiness at all.

“Gold clasps look” = when a women marries they become locked to their partner , man can contain her - trapped.

“Good pilgrim” (MIDDLE OF PLAY)

TECHNIQUES: religious imagery/metaphor.
ANALYSIS: Juliet is active = challenges patriarchal society at the time. Juliet extends Romeo’s metaphor = connection and acceptance. Lips are pilgrims , Juliet is the shrine asking for a kiss - extended metaphor.
First 14 lines in a sonnet shared = understanding for each other.

Romeo: “new baptised….romeo” (MIDDLE OF PLAY)

TECHNIQUES: repetition/ metaphor (“new baptised”)
ANALYSIS: announcing their love while talking about conflict - love and conflict inextricably linked. Repetition of “name” emphasises how important family relationships are , only their names are at war but love has given them new identities.
Metaphor = rejects his name, true love = reborn.
THEME: true love , family , dutiful love

TECHNIQUES: metaphor
ANALYSIS: metaphor for their marriage = equality. Being married but haven’t had their wedding night yet.
If it was a normal marriage then Juliet would only be “sold” but it’s equal. excited about sleeping with Romeo , makes their life more desirable and convincing.
Marriage = mansion
Sex = living in mansion

ANALYSIS: Juliet has a vision of Romeo dead in a tomb - foreshadows the next time Juliet will see Romeo - he will be dead in Capulet’s tomb.
Fate is powerful. Personified fate , fate is going to take Romeo away. They’re victims of fate and fate is the enemy.

ANALYSIS: gruesome language reminds the audience what she’s about to do is horrific - lie in sealed tomb with her cousin’s body.
Fear of madness - scared she might go mad and dash out her own brains with ancestors bones.

TECHNIQUES: oxymoronic language
ANALYSIS: Juliet gave a speech before she drank the potion but not here = actions are panicked and wants to kill herself before someone arrives.
Declaration of true love. Happy the dagger is there. People coming = speed = tension.
Feeling shocked - desire to end her own life show how in love she really is
THEME: true love , fate.

TECHNIQUES: metaphor , dramatic irony.
ANALYSIS: “impatient child” = ironic. To many in audience she’s still a child and it’s Romeo and juliets impatience that causes problems.
“May not wear them” = she may be married to Romeo but she may not enjoy their new lives together. Dramatic irony.

TECHNIQUES: imagery , Lang.
ANALYSIS: verb “will” = strong and defiant. Contrasts to Romeo that puts his future in the hands of fate , she takes it in her own hands. Even as play decends into tragedy, audience reminded of her goodness. “Unstained” remaining pure to Romeo and “sweet” = kindness. Two factors they constantly bring to the play.

“My dismal scene i needs must act alone” (END OF PLAY)

TECHNIQUES: symbolism , Lang.
ANALYSIS: Juliet’s isolation made clear. The words “I” , “my” , “alone” = no one to turn to when Romeo is banished.
“Dismal” painful when the audience remember that she married Romeo 3 days ago and the whole play is descending into tragedy.
