“O” (大)
Often translates to “big” or “major.”
What does a move starting with “Ko” generally mean
“Ko” (小)
Often translates to “small” or “minor.”
Ko Uchi Gari (Minor Inner Reap),
Ko Soto Gari (Minor Outer Reap).
What does a move ending with “Nage” generally mean
Nage (投げ)
If it ends in -Nage (投げ), it’s a throw
Example: Seoi Nage (Shoulder Throw).
What does a move ending with “Barai/Gari” generally mean
- Barai (払)
- Gari (刈)
- Barai (払) means “sweep.”
- Gari (刈) means “reap.”
* Osoto Gari (Major Outer Reap).
* De Ashi Barai (Advancing Foot Sweep)
