Writ of habeus corpus
Bring person to court and explain why they are being held
Bills of attainder
A law that punishes a person of a crime without a trial or fair hearing in court

Law that would allow a person to be punished for an action that was not against the law it was committed

Grand jury
A group of 12 to 23 citizens that hears evidence presented by a prosecutor. It decides whether there is enough evidence to indicate that the accused had committed a crime
Complaint
Statement naming the plaintiff and the defendant and describing the lawsuit
Summons
A document that announces that the defendant is being sued and sets a date and time for an appearance in court

Opportunity for lawyers to check facts and gather evidence
