Appeal
An application or proceeding for review by a higher court
Appeallate Court
Part of the judicial system that is responsible for hearing and reviewing appeals that have already been heard in a lower court
Civil Law
Disputes over non-criminal laws between two people
Criminal Law
A crime has been committed against the state/Law has been broken
Original Jurisdiction
The first court to hear a case
Capital Felony
A crime like murder, kidnapping with injury, treason…etc. may be punishable with DEATH
Defendant
A person, company, or institution being accused something in law
Verdict
A decision on a disputed issue in a civil or criminal case or an inquest
Mediation
Intervention in a dispute in order to resolve it; arbitration
Chief Justice
The title of the presiding judge in a Supreme Court
Circuit Court
an inferior trial-level court; appeals are heard by superior courts possessing the necessary jurisdiction
Felony
A crime, typically one involving violence, regarded as more serious than a misdemeanor, and usually punishable by imprisonment for more than one year or by death
Grand Jury
A jury, normally of twenty-three jurors, selected to examine the validity of an accusation before trial
