Judeo-Christian God Flashcards
Which part of genesis emphasises goodness in the world
“God saw that is was good” is repeated throughout genesis 1
What evidence suggests the universe is ex materia
‘God swept over the face of the waters’ - genesis 1
The women was made out of the mans rib in genesis 2
Ex nihilo nihil fit (nothing comes from nothing)
Any creator needs matter to construct with
What suggests the universe was created Ex nihilo
What created the pre-existing material?
Genesis 1:1 implies God created the heavens and the earth
New Testament, Romans - ‘God calls things into existence’ - St. Paul
Prime mover
Omnipotent
What is monolatry and monotheism?
Monolatry: know of other gods but believe/pray to one
Monotheism: only believe in one God, like Christians
How does ‘a mighty hand’ from genesis 2 cause concerns about his characteristics?
It anthropomorphises God by giving him human characteristics, also shows ex materia, where did it come from?
Some Christians argue that it is metaphorical/analogical, characteristics are built in God, whereas they aren’t for us, e.g. We may have strength but God is strength- is this anthropomorphising God?
What does ex nihilo and ex materia mean?
Ex nihilo: made out of nothing
Ex materia: made out of pre-existing material
How does God demonstrate his goodness/omnibenevolence in scripture
Commandments - ordered society, kind behaviour
Miracles - can right any wrongs
Prophecy - God tells us to look after one another
Incarnation - died for people’s sins
How does scripture show God isn’t good
Commandments - not relativist, are jealous (harms other religions)
Miracles - doesn’t help everyone? Evidence?
Prophecy - evidence? Why can’t he help everyone? (Christians may say free will is at risk)
Incarnation - omnipotence? Why not just cure the original sin?
