What do the jews do when they are morning for the dead?
There is a funeral service which takes place between 1-2 days after the persons death, mirrors are covered for 7 days. When someone dies they wear black and have a small tear in their close showing they have a broken heart.
What is bar mitzvah?
Bar mitzvah the a ceremony for when a boy turns 13 he becomes the ‘son of the commandment’
What is bat mitzvah?
Bat mitzvah is a ceremony for when a girl turns 12 she becomes the ‘daughter of the commandment’
What is Rosh Hashanah?
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish new year
What is yom kippur?
They day of fasting which takes place 10 days after Rosh Hashanah
What are Kosher foods?
Kosher foods are types of foods which meet the requirements for what Jewish people can eat
What are trefah foods?
Trefah foods are type of foods which Jews are not allowed to eat
What is the ner tamid?
The eternal light which is kept burning in the synagogue above the ark which symbolises God’s presence and it is never burnt out
What is the ark?
A cupboard which keeps the torah
What is the star of David?
A symbol of Judaism which is said to represent the shield of King David who ruled Jerusalem in the 10th century
What is the Bimah?
A platform in the synagogue where the torah is read from
What is the minyan?
The minyan are a group of at least 10 adults and it is the minimum number of Jews required for a Jewish service
What is the menorah?
A many-branched candlestick that holds between 7-9 candles
What is the talit?
A 4 cornered prayer shawl which is made from wool and it shows that the man is obeying God’s word
What is the teflin?
Leather boxes which contain extracts from the torah and it is strapped to the wearers arm and forehead for morning prayers
