Kiddush
A blessing recited when people drink wine that has been specially sanctified for the Sabbath or a holy day.
Kippa
A small circular cap worn by Jewish men
Kosher
Fulfilling the requirements of the Jewish dietary laws of Kashruth.
Menorah
a candlabrium wit the 7 branches, used at home an in a synagogue on the sabbath and holidays
Messiah
means “anointed one”. the jews hope that a great king will come to lead them
midrash
interpretation and commentary on the bible. by 100 ce, the rabbis had compiled a sizeable body of commentary on the bible
minyan
the quorum of 10 men (men or women) over 13-years old required for this worship
Mitzvah
a commandment from God; the act of performing a good deed. most well known deed = 10 commandments
monotheistic
believing in only 1 god
pesach
the passover’s festival in spring commemorating the liberation of the israelites from slavery in egypt
promised land
the area of canaan that the hebrews believed was promised to them by god
prophet
god’s messanger. delivers a message from god to god’s people
rabbi
a jewish scholar/teacher (religious leader)
rosh hashanah
festival celebrating the jewish new year
sedar
ceremonial dinner for the first 1-2 nights of passover
sefer torah
the text of the 5 books of moses hand written on parchment. the most sacred object of jewish life (essential for worship)
shivah
7-day mourning period after a death beginning immediately after the funeral
shoah
hebrew term for the holocaust (means destruction)
