A

Shabbat is a day in the week that Jews specifically keep for God and spending time with family and friends. On this day the family says a prayer and then eats a big meal. During Shabbat the family has a list of everything they should and should not do.

What are the basic laws of Keeping Kosher?

A

Meat and dairy cannot be mixed, only finned and scaled fish can be eaten, blood must be removed from all meat, a Jewish butcher must slaughter an animal but slitting its throat, only animals with split hooves and that chew their cud may be eaten.

Why are Jewish babies given a Hebrew name as well as another name?

A

Hebrew names have a significance.

Explain the process of when a Jewish baby is born.

A

On the Shabbat after the birth of a girl the father is usually asked to read from the Torah in the synagogue from the Bimah. After 8 days of a Jewish boy being born, he his given his Hebrew name and is circumcised(cutting of the flap of the penis)

How do Jews celebrate Bar and Bat Mitzvah? How are they different?

A

Bar Miztvah’s are the mens coming of age when they are 13. Bat miztvah’s are the women’s coming of age when they are 12. This means that their parents no longer have to care for their religious duties.

What is the festival of Pesach?

A

Passover. It commemorates the Angel of death ‘passing over’ all of the houses without blood on the doors(the freeing of the Jews as slaves in the Egyptian times).

What is the sedar meal?

A

It’s a meal very similar the to one that the freed Jews ate in 1200BC. A roasted egg(new life), parsley(God cared for the Jews when they were freed), Charoset(a paste made from fruit and nuts. Cement used for when Jews biult pyramids), Shankbone( lamb on the doors).
