•Dispersion of Jewish people beyond Israel
Mishnah
- First major written collection of Jewish oral traditions
* Document that describes a life of sanctification
Kashrut
- Jewish laws (in Hebrew) that prohibit the eating of certain foods
- Also require how other certain foods should be prepared
Mezuzah
•Piece of parchment contained in a decorative case, inscribed with Hebrew versus from the Torah
Kippah
•Brimless cap traditionally worn by my Jewish males to fulfil the customary requirement that the head must be covered
Tallit
•Garment worn by Jewish people as a symbol of devotion to God
Tefillin
•Set of small black leather boxes with leather straps containing scrolls of parchment inscribed with verses from the Torah. Worn by Jewish people when praying
Bat mitzvah
•Coming of age celebration for young Jewish females. •Time where they are recognised by their Jewish faith and regarded as the age of religious maturity
Pesach
- Jewish celebration celebrating the exodus of Israelites from slavery in Egypt.
- Usually celebrated with a family meal with foods with symbolic value commemorating the Israelites freedom
Yom Kippur
- Holiest day of the year for Jews concluding the “10 days of repentance”
- Jews traditionally spend this day praying and often refraining from work
Shabbat
•Jewish day meaning rest referring to the Torah where God created 6 days and rest on the 7th
Menorah
- Candelabrum used for Jewish rituals consisting of 9 candles
- 9th candle (shamash) is placed in the middle and is the only one used for light
