Since Nan and Nani both mean what, when is Nan used?

A
  1. When it precedes a word whose first mora is either in
    the ta, da, or na-row.
    (When the word after it is the T, D, N letter group)
    Ex:
    What is this? = Kore wa nan desu ka
    What is the book about? = Nan no hon desu ka.
  2. When it is followed by a counter suffix or the like
    Ex: Nansai, Nangai, Nanpun, Nanji, etc.
