What is Joint Planning?
The deliberate process of determining how to implement strategic guidance: how (the ways) to use military capabilities (the means) in time and space to achieve objectives (the ends) within an acceptable level of risk.
What are the four planning functions?
Strategic Guidance, concept development, plan development, and plan assessment
What is strategy?
A prudent idea or set of ideas for employing the instruments of national power in a synchronized and integrated fashion to achieve theater, national, and multinational objectives.
What is Strategic Art?
the formulation, coordination, and application of ends, ways, and means to implement policy and promote national interests.
What is operational art?
the cognitive approach by commanders and staffs - supported by their skill, knowledge, experience, creativity, and judgement - to develop strategies, campaigns, and operations to organize and employ military forces by integrating ways, means, and evaluating risks.
What are the principles of planning?
Focused on the OBJ, Globally integrated and Coordinated, Resource Informed, Risk Informed, Framed within the Strategic Environment, and Operational Environment, Informs Decision Making, Adaptive and Flexible.
What document captures the President’s strategic security guidance?
the National Security Strategy
What document captures the Secretary of Defense’s defense guidance?

What is the UCP?
The Unified Command Plan, establishes the the CCMDs and responsibilities of and missions of the CCDRs. Signed by the President.
What is the CPG?
Contingency Planning Guidance fulfills the statutory requirement in Title 10, USC, provides written policy guidance on the preparation and review of campaign and contingency plans.
What is JPEC?
The Joint Planning and Execution Community - consists of the supported commander, the supporting commanders, and the coordinating authority.
What is adaptive planning?
The idea of developing plans that contain military options for the President and SecDef as they seek to shape the environment and respond to contingencies.
