Journeyman Test Flashcards
Define a clearance
An assurance from a switching authority that a specified power system is isolated and will not be ordered re energized until that worker reports the crew in the clear and the equipment ready for service
What is required before a clearance
Visual opens and tags
How to obtain a clearance
Call dispatch give name company name time and circuit number and tell them you are requesting a clearance at your location and your tagged open points
How are capacitors hooked up
Series in substations parallel in distribution circuits
What are discharge resistors
Located inside capacitors to discharge capacitance
How do you take a capacitor offline
Load break cut outs open
Remove high sides
Wait five minutes
Test and ground high sides
Shunt high sides
What are capacitors rated in
Kvars
What is capacitance measured in
Ferrads
How do you take a regulator bank off line
Turn scada off
Set to manual
Step to zero
Verify neutral 3 ways (light,tester,dial)
Pull motor fuse
Close bypass
Open source and load disconnects
Turn reg bank controls to off
What is a reclosure and how does it work
A device that senses fault current and will open a line but will close back and will open a line but will close back in on the fault around 3 times until the fault is cleared or the recloser will stay in the open position can also be set to one shot capabilities in the event there is a worker on the line
What is a hotline hold
A setting option on a recloser that is a “trip sensitive” setting meaning in the event of any type of fault the recloser will open the line incredibly quickly used when doing hot work generally
What is an eye splice good for
90% of the ropes breaking strength
What is the current on a series street light circuit
What are fiberglass sticks tested at
100kv for five minutes per foot
What are wood hot sticks tested at
75000 volts per foot for five minutes
What is required after 4 ft of climbing
100% tie in
How many secondary bushings on cans 100kva and above
4
A customer has a 10hp motor what size can is needed
7.5 kva
What should you do before pulling a bayonet fuse
Pull the bleeder valve
How much weight can you put on a latter
2.5 times the weight of the latter
Ohms law ?
E=I(R)
Why should transformers have similar resistance
The lower resistance can will carry all of the load causing the other to overheat
What is a lighting arrestor
A device that diverts over current to ground protecting the equipment it is in parallel with
Means of re energization
Lightning back feed induction accidental contact with energized lines occurring from a car hit pole for example or accidental energization from human error
Mad on 13.2
2 ft 3
Mad on 34.5
3 ft
Mad on 115
3 ft 9
Mad on 230
6 ft 2
What is considered high voltage
600 volts
Define a neutral
A current carrying conductor at ground potential tied to the substation ground grid and serves as a return of the imbalance of the system
