Journals Flashcards
Study Name: Improved Immunogenicity with High-Dose Seasonal Influenza Vaccine in HIV-Infected Persons.
Annals of Internal Medicine. Volume 158. Number 1. Date: 1 Jan, 2013.
What was the main conclusion?
HIV-infected persons reach higher levels of influenza seroprotection if vaccinated with the high-dose trivalent vaccine than with the standard-dose.
Adverse Effects Associated With Transcather Aortic Valve Implantation
A Meta-analysis of Contempory Studies
Annals of Internal Medicine. Volume 158. Number 1. Date: 1 Jan, 2013
What was the main conclusion?
The most common adverse effects associated with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Inplantation are:
- Heart Block
- Vascular complications.
- Renal failure.
The type of transcatheter valve and the route of implantation are associated with observed variations in the risks for some adverse effects.
Menopausal Hormone Therapy of the Primary Prevention of Chronic Conditions: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement.
Annals of Internal Medicine. Volume 158. Number 1. Date: 1 Jan, 2013
What are the two main recommendations?
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends against the use of:
- Combined estrogen and progestin for the prevention of chronic conditions in postmenopausal women.
- Estrogen for the prevention of chronic conditions in postmenopausal women who have had a hysterectomy.
These are both Grade D recommendations.
Plasma Phospholipid Long-Chain omega-3 Fatty Acids and Total and Cause-Specific Mortality in Older Adults.
A Cohort Study.
Annals of Internal Medicine. Volume 158. Number 7. Date: 2 April 2013
What was the main conclusion?
Higher circulating individual and total omega-3 phospholipid fatty acid levels are associated with lower total mortality, especially coronary heart disease death, in older adults.
**Discontinuation of Statins in Routine Care Settings. **
A Cohort Study
Annals of Internal Medicine. Volume 158. Number 7. Date: 2 April 2013
What is the main conclusion?
Statin-ralated events are commonly reported and often lead to statin discontinuation. However, most patients who are rechallenged can tolerate statins long-term. This suggests that many of the statin-related events may have other causes, are tolerable, or may be specific to individual statins rather than the entire drug class.
Medical Management to Prevent Recurrent Nephrolithiasis in Adults: A Systematic Review for an American College of Physicians Clinical Guideline.
Annals of Internal Medicine. Volume 158. Number 7. Date: 2 April 2013
What was the main conclusion?
In patient with one past kidney stone, increased fluid intake reduced recurrence risk. In patients with multiple past calcium stones, addition of thiazide, citrate, or allopurinol further reduced risk.
