Journal of Implantology Flashcards
Abscess
Contained and controlled lesion made of pus (neutrophils); Defensive mechanism to prevent the spread of the infection. Due to inflammation induced by either localized infection caused by bacteria or parasites OR foreign materials lodged in tissue.
Absorbed Radiation Dose
AKA - Total Ionizing Dose (TID); Amount of energy that radiation deposits into a material. Measured in grays (Gy); 1Gy = 1J of radiation energy per kg of material
Important to determine potential impaction of radiation exposure on health
Abutment
Connects the implant w/ the crown; 3 different kinds - Ti, Zn, Custom
Abutment Analog
Replica of the implant abutment used when making impression for lab fabrication of the definitive implant abutment
Abutment Driver
Secures or removes abutment screw that fastens the implant abutment to the implant fixture
Abutment Screw
The part fastens the abutment to the implant fixture (body)
Accretion
Accumulation of plaque, calculus, or material alba (plaque w/o structure) on teeth or implants
Centric Relation
Condyle is most stable/balanced position (superior and anterior w/i glenoid fossa) w/ the articular discs properly interposed b/w condyles and the fossa
- Reproducible
- Independent of Tooth Contact
Acrylic Resin
Synthetic plastic material; durable, versatile
Acrylic Resin Veneer - Lamination (thin covering) on facial surface
Osteogenic
Transfer of osteocompetent cells for de novo bone formation. E.g. Autograft
Osteoinduction
Bone formation by stimulation of host mesenchymal cells to differentiate. E.g. Allograft, bone morphogenic protein
Wolff’s Law
Bone adapts to load..bone remodels and becomes stronger to resist that load. Inverse is true
What are the IV Types of Bone?
I - Dense cortical bone - hard, takes effort
IV - Soft cancellous bone
What is a mineralized bone graft?
Scaffold for structural support, maintains volume. Think osteoconductive
What is a demineralized bone graft?
Faster resorption (remodeling) for socket preservation
Atorvastatin (Lipitor)
Used to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Levothyroxine (Synthroid)
thyroid hormone replacement used for hypothyroidism
Lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril)
An ACE inhibitor commonly prescribed for high blood pressure and heart failure.
Metformin (Glucophage)
An oral medication for type 2 diabetes, helping control blood sugar levels.
Amlodipine (Norvasc)
A calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure and angina (chest pain).
Metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol-XL)
A beta-blocker prescribed for high blood pressure, chest pain, and heart failure.
Omeprazole (Prilosec)
A proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used for acid reflux, GERD, and stomach ulcers.
Simvastatin (Zocor)
Another statin for managing cholesterol levels.
Losartan (Cozaar)
An angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used for high blood pressure and protecting the kidneys in diabetic patients.
