He saw reduced infection rates

He used carbolic acid on medical instruments and bandages
What effect did this have?
It immediately reduced death rates from up to 50% (1864-66) to around 15% (1867-70)
Why did Lister face opposition from doctors?
They found carbolic spray unpleasant to inhale or on their skin.
What does aseptic mean?
Germ-free
How are medical instruments kept aseptic?
They are sterilised with 120°C steam before use
How do theatre staff stay aseptic?
They sterillise their hands before entering and wear sterile gowns, masks, gloves and hats.
How are the theatres kept aseptic?
They are kept extremely clean and fed with sterile air.
