A
– In 1857 He is born in Poland
but he is forced to leave the country because of his father’s political ideas
– In 1874 he joins the marine service
He becomes a officer of the British merchant navy and travels a lot for example in India, Borneo and Australia.
– In 1890 he visits Congo
His nomadic life inspires his novels.
After retiring he becomes a full time writer.
