joints - skeletal system Flashcards
what is a joint?
a point of contact between 2 or more bones, between bones & cartilage and bones & teeth
what is the scientific study of joints called?
arthology
structual classification is based on?
based on the presence/ absence of synovial cavity and type of connective tissue
joints stucturally are?
fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial
functional classification is based on?
degree of movement permitted
Fibrous structural classification means?
no synovial cavity, bone are held together by fibrous connective tissue
Cartilaginous structural classification means?
no synovial cavity, bone are held together by cartilage
Synovial structural classification means?
have a synovial cavity, bones are held together by articular capsule & often ligaments
joints functionally are?
synarthrotic, anmphiarthrotic, diarthrotic
synarthrotic functional classification means?
an immovable joint
amphiarthrotic function classification means?
a partially moveable joint
diarthrotic function classification means?
a freely moveable joint
define fibrous joints?
they lack a synovial cavitiy, they have articulating bones held together by fibrous connective tissue, permit little to no movement
what are the main types of fibrous joints?
Suture Joints, Syndesmotic Joint, Gomphotic Joint
a nsuture joint is
a fibrous joint composed of a thin layer of dense fibrous connective tissue
ex: sutures in the skull (they don’t move)
