Joints of Thoracic Wall Flashcards
Costovertebral joints of head of ribs
Synovial Plane Joints
Articulate with head of each rib to superior demifacet or costal facet of corresponding vertebral body and inferior demicfacaet or costal facet to vertebral body superior to it
Interveretebral Joint
Type- symphysis (secondary cartilanginous joint)
Articulations- Adjacent vertebral bodies bound together by vertebral disc
Ligaments- Anterior and posterior longitudinal
Costotransverse
Plane synovial joint(synovial plane joint)
Articulate tubercle of rib to with transverse process of corresponding vertebra
Sternocostal
1st rib is primary cartilaginous
2-7 are synovial plane joints
Articulates sternum with mandibrum(1st rib) or costal cartilages.
Sternoclavicular
Saddle type synovial joint(acts as ball and socket)
Connects sternal end of clavicle to with manubrium and 1st costal cartilage
Costochondral
Primary cartilaginous joint
Connects lateral end of costal cartilage with sternal end of rib
Interchondral
Synovial Plane Joint Articulates between costal cartilages of 6-7th rib 7-8 8-9
Manubriosternal
Secondary cartilaginous Joint
Between manbrium and body of sternum
Xiphisternal
Primary cartilanginous joint (synchrondrosis)
Connects body of sternum to xiphoid process
