joints + classifications Flashcards
What is a fibrous joint?
Is a joint that provides protection, strength and weight bearing responsibilities within the body
What is the structure of a fibrous joint?
No synovial cavity
articulating bones are held together by dense irregular CT
What is the movement available in a fibrous joint?
little or no movement at all
What is a cartilaginous joint?
are a joint where the bones are entirely joined by cartilage
What is the structure of a cartilaginous joint?
the bones are united by just cartilage
What is the movement available in a cartilaginous joint?
More movement that a fibrous joint but less than a synovial joint
What is a synovial joint?
prevents friction between the articulating bones of a joint cavity
What is the structure of a synovial cavity?
2 bony surfaces that are encapsulated by a fibrous capsule and a synovial lining
What are structural classification?
Fibrous, cartilaginous and synovial joints
What movement is available in a synovial joint?
the most of all joints - flexion/extension and adduction/abduction
What are functional classifications?
synathroses, amphithroses, and diarthroses
What is a synarthrosis joint?
are immovable joints that are fibrous
What is a amphiarthrosis joint?
a joint that has limited mobility and is a cartilaginous structure.
What is a diarthroses joint?
is a freely moveable joint and is a synovial joint
