Joints, Bursae, Synovial tendon sheaths Flashcards
2 main joint types
Synarthroses and diarthroses
Synarthroses
Together joints. Bones joined by this joint type are separated by connective tissue which permits limited joint movement
Diarthroses
Moveable or synovial joints. Provide free movement between the bones they join. Joints of locomotion have these kinds of joints. Have synovial fluid, space and membrane, articular surface, fibrous capsule
Synovial fluid
For joint lubrication
Synovial space
Cavity of discontinuity between participating bones
Fibrous capsule
Present in diarthrodial joints
Synovial membrane
Lines fibrous capsule
Articular surface
Smooths surfaces for articulation. Made of hyaline cartilage that caps underlying bones
3 types of synarthroidal joints
Syndesmosis, Synchondrosis, Synostosis
Syndesmosis
Fibrous joint. Opposed bones connected by fibrous tissue, almost immovable (examples–sutures of the cranium)
Synchondrosis
Cartilaginous joint. 2 bones separated by cartilage. Permits very little movement.
Epiphyseal plate
Slight bending movement allowed Primary cartilaginous joint (temporary). Present in children, but gone in adults
Intervertebral disc
Secondary cartilaginous joint. Slight movement. Made of fibrocartilage
Symphysis
Secondary cartilaginous joint. Slight movement Made of fibrocartilage between two pubic bones
Synostosis
2 bones joined together by bone. Joint may have existed during development and grew as fibrous or cartilaginous until it was replaced as bone
