Joints and Movements Vocabulary Flashcards
joint
point of contact between two bones, between bone and cartilage, or between bone and teeth
articulation
point of contact between two bones
arthrosis
point of contact between two bones
arthrology
scientific study of joints
kinesiology
study of motion of the human body
synovial cavity
space between articulating bones
fibrous joint
no synovial cavity; bones held together by dense irregular connective tissue that is rich in collagen fibers (structural classification of joints)
cartilaginous joints
no synovial cavity and the bones are held together by cartilage (structural classification of joints)
synovial joints
bones forming the joint have a synovial cavity and are united by the dense irregular connective tissue of an articular capsule, and often by accessory ligaments (structural classification of joints)
synarthrosis
immovable joint; plural is synarthroses (functional classification of joints)
amphiarthrosis
slightly movable joint; plural is amphiarthroses (functional classification of joints)
diarthrosis
freely movable joint; plural is diarthroses. All diarthroses are synovial joints that have a variety of shapes and permit several different types of movements (functional classification of joints)
sutures
fibrous joint composed of a thin layer of dense irregular connective tissue; occur only between bones of the skull (synarthrosis)
synostosis
bony joint—a joint with complete fusion of two separate bones into one bone (synarthrosis)
metopic suture
forehead suture
syndesmosis
fibrous joint with greater distance between articulating surfaces (ligament) with more dense irregular connective tissue than in sutures
gomphosis/dentoalveolar joint
syndesmosis where a cone-shaped peg fits into a socket (nail/bolt)
periodontal disease
inflammation and degeneration of the gums, periodontal ligament, and bone
interosseous membrane
a substantial sheet of dense irregular connective tissue that binds neighboring long bones and permits slight movement (amphiarthrosis)
synchondrosis
a cartilaginous joint in which the connecting material is hyaline cartilage (synarthrosis)
symphysis
cartilaginous joint where the ends of the articulating bones are covered with hyaline cartilage, but a broad, flat disc of fibrocartilage connects the bones (amphiarthrosis)
articular cartilage
hyaline cartilage that covers articulating surface of bones
articular (joint) capsule
outer fibrous membrane and an inner synovial membrane that surrounds a synovial joint, encloses the synovial cavity, and unites the articulating bones
fibrous membrane of joint capsule
thickened continuation of the periosteum between the bones
ligaments
a short band of tough, flexible fibrous connective tissue which connects two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint
synovial membrane
inner layer of the articular capsule; areolar connective tissue with elastic fibers
articular fat pads
accumulation of adipose tissue in the synovial membrane
