Joints Flashcards
What are joints?
Joints occur where two bones meet. Joints allow movement to take place.
Where is the hinge joint found?
Elbow,knee,finger
What is the type of movement the hinge joint experiences?
In only one plane-like the hinge on a door
What type of movement does the ball and socket joint experience?
In all directions
Where is the ball and socket joint found?
Hip and shoulder
Where is the pivot joint found?
Neck
What type of movement does the pivot joint experience?
Nodding or turning
What type of movement does a Fixed joint experience?
No movement
Where is the fixed joint found in the body?
Skull and pelvis
What type of movement does a gliding joint experience?
Slight movement
Where is the gliding joint found in the body?
Backbone
What are synovial joints?
This is where movement occurs, hinge and ball and socket joints are both types of synovial joints.
What do tendons do?
-Muscles are connected to the bones by tendons. When muscles work, they pull on tendons and move the bone.
What does cartilage do?
-The ends of the bones are covered with cartilage. This acts as a shock-absorber and stops the two bones from rubbing together. It is a resilient and smooth elastic tissue
What does the synovial membrane do?
-The synovial membrane encloses synovial fluid. This lubricates or oils the joints and makes movement easy.
