Joints Flashcards
Joint mobility
Wide range of motion, less stable
Joint stability
Less mobile
Fibrous joint
Bones held together by collagen fibers, Gomphoses=Synarthroses, teeth to maxilla and mandible
Sutures= Synarthroses, between skull bones
Syndesmoses=Amphiarthroses, between parallel bones like radius and ulna
Cartilaginous joints
Bones held together by cartilage,
Synchondroses=Synarthroses, bones joined by hyaline cartilage
Symphyses=Amphiarthroses, bones joined by pad if Fibrocartilage
Synovial joint
Bones separated by fluid, Diarthroses
Synarthroses
Immobile joints (most stable)
Amphiarthroses
Slightly mobile joints
Diarthroses
Freely mobile joints
Articulate capsule
2 layers
Fibrous layer- outer layer made of dense regular connective tissue, strengthens joint
Synovial membrane- inner membrane that secretes synovial fluid to lubricate and absorb shock
Joint
Place where joint meets a bone, cartilage, or teeth
Articular cartilages
In synovial joints covered by hyaline cartilage, prevents bone to bone contact
Bursae
Sacs outside most synovial joints where ligaments, muscles, tendons, and or bones rub
Tendon sheaths
Elongated Bursae around tendons, particularly in confined areas where tendons rub
Uniaxial
Bone moves in one plane
Biaxial
Bone moves in two planes
