Minimal movement
Synarthoses
No movement
Diarthroses
Movement
Hinge joint
Move on one axis
Convex surface fits into concave surface
Ex: ip joints and elbow
Bicondylar
Move freely in one axis and with minimally in another (biaxial)
Two rounded condylars interact with flat/concave surface
Ex: knee
Ellipsoid joint
Move freely in two axes
One rounded convex bone into concave surface
Ex: mcp joints
Saddle joint
Like sitting in saddle
Allows for flex/ext, add/abd and rotation
Ex: first cmc joint
Ball and socket
Multi-axial
One ball end goes into deep concave pocket
Ex: shoulder/hip
Pivot joint
Rotates only-uniaxial
Ex: radioulnar joint, atlanto-axial joint
Plane joints
Sliding joints and non-axial
Minimal sliding/gliding motion
Ex: 2nd-5th cmc joints
Sutures
Connected by connective tissue=sutural ligaments
No movement in adulthood
Ex: only in skull
Symphyses
Interconnect bones with a fibrocartilage discs. Have layer of hyaline cartilage and supported by ligaments
Amphiarthosis
Ex: symphysis pubis and intervertebral disc
