Joints Flashcards
What is an amphiarthrosis joint?
Slightly mobile joint
What is articulation?
Joint of the body
What is a biaxial joint?
Type of diathrosis: a joint that allows for movements within two planes (two axes)
What is a cartilaginous joint?
Joint at which the bones are united by hyaline cartilage (synchondrosis) or fibreocartilage (symphysis)
What is diarthrosis?
Freely mobile joint
What is a fibrous joint?
Joint where the articulating areas of the adjacent bones are connected by fibrous connective tissue.
What is a joint?
Site at which two or more bones come together (articulate)
What is a joint cavity?
Space enclosed by the articular capsule of the synovial joint that is filled with synovial fluid and contains the articulating surfaces of the adjacent bone.
What is a multiaxial joint
Type of diathrosis: a joint that allows for movements within three planes (three axis)
What is a synarthrosis joint?
Immobile or nearly immobile joint
What is a synovial joint?
Joint at which the articulating surfaces of the bones are located within a joint cavity formed by an articular capsule.
What is a uniaxial joint?
Type of diarthrosis: joint that allows for motion within only one plane (one axis)
What is a plane joint?
2 planes sliding past each other
What is a pivot joint?
A bone enclosed in soft tissue from other bone
What is a hinge joint?
Elbow
