Q

Types of Fibrous Joints

A

Gomphosis- Socket for tooth: allows minimal amount of movement

Suture- suture in skull: immovable after infancy

Q

Amphiarthroidal/ Cartilaginous Joint

A

Cartilage provides the union between two bones, Allows limited (slight to moderate) movement

Synchondrosis Joint- Bones joined by or united to hyaline cartilage (i.e. stenocostal joint - between the cartilage of the ribs and the sternum)

Symphysis Joint- Intervertebral disks: slight movement between bones

Q

Disarthrodial/ Synovial Joints

A

all include a joint cavity containing synovial fluid around which is an articular capsule, most freely movable joints in the body

Structure- bone, Hyaline Cartilage, Ligament, Synovial Membrane, Synovial Cavity filled with Synovial Fluid

Q

Types of Synovial/ Diarthrodial Joints

A

Pivot Joint

Cricoitheriod Joint (joint between the cricoid cartilage of the larynx and the thyroid cartilage of the larynx) STRUCTURE: synovial joint FUNCTION: muscle contraction allows the cricoid cartilage to rotate upward and the thyroid cartilage to rotate downward

Saddle Joint

Cricoarytenoid Joint (joint between the cricoid cartilage of the larynx and the arytenoid cartilage of the larynx
STRUCTURE: synovial joint
FUNCTION: muscle contraction allows rocking of the arytenoid cartilage and sliding of the arytenoid cartilage

Condyloidal Joint

Joint between the mandible and temporal bone: free movement for opening and closing plus some side to side movement

Pivot Joint

Medial atlanto-axial joint (joint between first two vertebra): allows rotation of the head to left and right
