Joints Flashcards
How many types of joints are there?
3 main types :
-fibrous
-cartilaginous
-synovial
Explain fibrous joints
-No jointy cavity
-Thin layer of fibrous tissue connecting the edges of the two bones
-Continuous with periosteum
-No movement e.g between sutures in the skull
Explain cartilaginous joints
-No joint cavity
-Bones can be separated by fibrocartilage disk or by a thick layer of hyaline cartilage
-Limited movement
Explain synovial joints
-Has a joint cavity!
-Most commonly occuring join in the body
-most important for movement
-Several distinctive features
Synovial joints
-Gliding
-Hinge
-Pivot
-Condyloid
-Saddle
-Ball and socket
Gliding joints
Least amount of movement.
Bones = flat or slightly curved, glide back and forth and side to side
Found= between tarsal bones + carpal bones
Hinge joints
Bend (flex) or straighten (extend) = one direction only = elbow joint, knees, between phalanges
Usually, surface= convex, fits into concave surfaces
