Joints Flashcards
Fibrous Joints (Synarthroses)
Not Movable
Cartilaginous joints (Amphiarthroses)
Slightly movable - connect bones using cartilage
Synovial joints (Diathroses)
Freely movable (knee and elbow) - mostly found in limbs - joint capsule, synovial membrane, joint cavity, ligaments, Articular cartilage
Gliding joint (Type)
Found in between tarsals (foot)
Ball and socket (Type)
Shoulder - Between scapular (shoulder blade) and arm bone
Saddle Joint (Type)
In between first metacarpal and trapezium
Pivot Joint (Type)
Between atlas (first) and Axis (second) vertebra
Candyloid joint (Type)
Between radius and scaphoid bone (in wrist)
Hinge joint (Type)
Elbow joint - between humorous, radius
Flexion (Joint movements)
Bending a joint to decrease angle of joint
Extension (Joint movements)
Straightening of joint to increase angle of the joint
Hypertension (Joint movements)
Extreme extension of a joint beyond normal straight position
Dosiflexion (Foot - Joint movements)
Moving toes or foot upwards
Plantar flexion (Foot - Joint movements)
Moving toes or foot downwards (towards plantar surface)
Abduction (Joint movements)
Movement of a body part away from the midline
Adduction (Joint movements)
Movement of a body part towards the midline
Circumduction (Joint movements)
Rotation of arm
Internal rotation (Joint movements)
Bone spins towards the body’s midline
External (Joint movements)
Bone spins away from body’s midline
Supination (Palm - Joint movements)
Movement that turns palm upwards
Pronation (Palm - Joint movements)
Movement that turns palm downwards
Inversion (Foot - Joint movements)
Foot movement that turns the sole medially, towards other foot
Eversian (Foot - Joint movements)
Foot movement that turns sole distally, away from other foot
Protraction (Joint movements)
Moving body part forwards
Retraction (Joint movements)
Moving body part backwards
