Joints Flashcards
There are 3 types of joint in the human skeleton – state them?
Fixed
Slightly moveable
Synovial
Describe a fixed joint
They are fibrous or immovable. Fixed joints form when bones interlock during early childhood.
Give an example of a fixed joint?
The bone plates in your cranium, fixed together and protect your brain
Describe a synovial joint?
These are our freely movable joints and have high mobility.
They are vital for sporting movements and allow various ‘actions’ when 2 or more bones meet to form the joint.
They all have a distinctive structure
State an example of a synovial joint
Shoulder, elbow, hip or knee
Describe a slightly moveable joint?
Also knowns as cartilaginous.
The ends of the bone are covered in a smooth covering called articular cartilage reducing friction.
State an example of a slightly moveable joint?
Found between sections of the vertebrae
What is the description of a ligament and tendon?
Ligaments attach bone to bone
Tendons attach muscle to bone
What is the description of synovial fluid and cartilage
Synovial fluid provides lubrication
Cartilage prevents friction or bones rubbing together.
What is the description of joint capsule and bursae?
Joint capsule is tough fibrous tissue, encloses the joint and provides support.
Bursae is a sack of fluid, which reduces friction
