Pivot joints
Allow movement around one axis. E.g. atlas and axis, first two cervical vertebrae
Hinge joints
Allow movement on one plane allowing flexion and extension.
E.g. Elbow joint, joints between phalanges.
Ellipsoid joint
Allow movement in two planes with limited rotation. E.g. Radiocarpal joint
Gliding joints
Least movable synovial joint, where bones glide over each other. (Intercarpal, intertarsal joints)
Ball and socket joint
Most movable joints and allow extension, flexion, adduction, abduction, rotation, circumduction. (shoulder, hip)
Condylar joint
Uniaxial movement with limited rotation. (Femorotibial joint or stifle.)
Saddle joint
Shaped like a saddle with the other bone resting on a joint like a rider on a horse.
