Joint Types Flashcards
Name distinguishing features of each.
What is a distinguishing feature of planar (gliding) joints?
consists of flat articular surfaces in which bones slide over each other with relatively limited movement
What is a distinguishing feature of condylar (ellipsoid) joints?
biaxial joint; convex surface of one bone fits into a complementary-shaped depression on the other bone
What is a distinguishing feature of hinge joints?
monoaxial joint
What is a distinguishing feature of ball and socket joints?
They are the only multiaxial synovial joint and the most freely movable joint
What is a distinguishing feature of pivot joints?
rounded end of one bone conforms to a sleeve/ring of another bone; uniaxial rotation of bone around its own long axis
