Joint Movement Flashcards
What is flexion? Give an example.
Flexion is the decrease is the angle between two joints. Bending your elbow to bring your forearm upward.
What is extension? Give an example.
Extension is the increase in the angle between two joints. The extension of the elbow when throwing a shot put.
What is abduction? Give an example.
Abduction is the movement away from the midline of the body. Raising arms to the side of your body or spreading fingers and toes.
What is adduction? Give an example.
Adduction is movement towards from the midline of the body. Bringing your arms/fingers back to the sides of your body.
What is rotation? Give an example.
Rotation is where bones turn their own axis. The hip joint in golf when performing a drive shot.
What is circumduction? Give an example.
Circumduction is where limbs moves in a circular motion. Your shoulder joint during an overarm tennis serve.
What is pronation and supination? Give an example for each.
Pronation and supination are terms used to describe the down or up orientation of your hand also including arm and foot although when it is on the ground. A pull up with your palms facing forward is wrist pronation. An example of supination is when your face your palm to the ceiling.
What is the difference between plantarflexion and dorsiflexion? Give a example for each.
Plantar flexion is where toes are facing down and your heel raises whereas dorsiflexion is where the heel lowers and toes are up. An example for plantar flexion includes standing on your tip toes or pressing a gas pedal. An example of dorsiflexion is taking a step while walking or flexing your toes towards your shin.
What is inversion? Give an example.
Inversion is where your sole is facing inwards. If your invert your feet, your will trip over. When the plantar surface of your foot turns medially.
What is eversion? Give an example.
Eversion is where your sole is facing outwards. You can’t trip when your sole is facing outward and can stand comfortably. When the foot rotates the sole faces away from the midline of the body.
Compare radial deviation and ulnar deviation.
Radial deviation is where your wrist abducts towards your radius bone and whereas ulnar deviation is where your wrist adducts towards your ulnar.
What does medial rotation mean (internal rotation).
Medial rotation is where you internally rotate the shoulder to make your thumb point towards you.
What is lateral rotation? (external rotation).
Lateral rotation is where you externally rotate the shoulder to make the thumb point outside.
What is scapula elevation, depression, protraction and retraction?
Up, down, forward, backward.
