Joint Fusion Flashcards
1
Q
Arthrodesis
A
Joint Fusion - artificial induction of joint ossification. Remove damaged joint tissue and facilitate healing such that bones unite
2
Q
Arthrodesis used to treat…
A
- Pain
- Disability
- Decreased function and range of motion
- Instability
As a result of fractures disrupting the joint, OA< RA, joint instability and infection
3
Q
Biomechanical effects of carpal fusion
A
- Change in carpal positioning
- Reduced wrist motion
- Altered force transmission
- Reduced grip strength
- Four-corner fusion (pain relief, patient satisfaction, ROM, grip strength)
4
Q
Surgical Fusion Reasons
A
- Degenerative disc disorder
- Fractured vertebra
- Disc herniation
- Spondylosis
- Scoliosis
- Sponylolisthesis
- Tumour
To alleviate pain, stabilise the spine and maximise axial load bearing.
5
Q
Reasons for Lumbar Fusion
A
- Scoliosis
- Spondylolisthesis
- Stenosis
- Disc herniation
- Disc degeneration
6
Q
Types of spinal fusion
A
- Posterolateral (bone graft placed between transverse processes, vertebrae fixed with stabilising construct)
- Interbody (IVD removed, bone graft placed in the removal site, typically better fusion rate, anterior to posterior approach)
7
Q
Biomechanical effects of spinal fusion
A
- Alters load transmission (increase pressure in adjacent discs)
- Adjacent segments compensate for ROM
