Joint Classification Flashcards
Joints that have hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage that connects one bone to another. Slightly movable joints.
Synchondrosis
Symphysis
Cartilaginous (amphiarthroses)
Synchondrosis: sternum and true rob articulation
Symphysis: pubic symphysis
Joints that are composed of bones that are united by fibrous tissue and are nonsynovial. Movement is minimal to none.
Suture
Syndesmosis
Gomphosis
Fibrous joints (synarthrosis)
Suture: (Sagittal suture of the skull)
Syndesmosis: (interosseous membrane: tibia and fibula)
Gomphosis: (tooth in socket)
These joints provide free movement between bones they join. They have 5 distinguishing characteristics: joint cavity, articular cartilage, synovial membrane, synovial fluid, and fibrous capsule.
Synovial joints (diarthroses)
Synovial joints:
Uniaxial (2)
Biaxial (2)
Multiaxial (2)
Uniaxial: *Hinge (ginglymus) Elbow *Pivot (trochoid) Atlantoaxial Biaxial: *Condyloid - MCP *Saddle - CMC of thumb Multiaxial *Plane (gliding) carpal joints *Ball and socket: hip joint
