Q

what were pals battalions and why were there tragic consequences?

A

they were groups of men that knew each other and that were guaranteed to fight with each other. Brothers, friends, cousins, sports teams and workmates all enlisted together. Although this technique was very successful it had tragic consequences. As whole groups of men were wiped out. e.g. of the 720 acrington pals only 136 returned.
