What does John Stuart Mill think is of greatest importance?
The well-being of the individual.
What’s the difference between quantitative and qualitative pleasures?
Quantitative-Concerned with the amount.
Qualitative-Concerned with the value and nature.
What example did Mill give which gave him concern about “the greatest good for the greatest number”?
The sadistic guards. (The left hand side of Pg22)
What are higher and lower pleasures? Give an example.
Higher pleasures-More intelligence based and stimulating for the mind. Eg Puzzles.
Lower pleasures-Bodily pleasure that only last for a short while. Eg Alcohol.
Summarise Rule utilitarianism.
It establishes the best overall rule by determining the course of action which, when pursued by the whole community, leads to the greatest result.
