John Snow Flashcards
Ignaz Semmelweiss
Discovered the importance of hand washing to reduce the spread of disease
Bacteria multiply by simple cell division
Once every 20 minutes if they have enough nutrients and a suitable temperature
Bacteria can be grown
In a nutrient broth solution or as colonies on an agar gel plate
Uncontaminated cultures of microorganisms
Required for investigating the action of disinfectants and antibiotics
Equipment used to grow culture plates
Petri-dish , inoculating loop, agar gel
Oesophagus
Tube that joins the mouth and the stomach
Stomach
Churn food, contains hydrochloric acid. Contains peptidases to digest proteins
Small intestine
Where digestion of lipids and some carbohydrates occurs
Large intestines
Absorbs water
Pancreas
Produces enzymes for digestion
Liver
Large organ where bile is made
Gall bladder
Where bile is made
Bile
Used to neutralise the acid from the stomach and emulsify fats
Prokaryotic cells
Bacteria cells that don’t have membrane bound organelles
Prokaryotic cells contain
Flagellum , capsule, cell wall, plasma membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, pili, small circular loop of DNA, circular loop of DNA
Eukaryotic cells
Cell such as plant, animal and fungi cells that have membrane bound organelles such as a nucleus, chloroplast, and mitochondria
Eukaryotic cell contains
Nucleus, ribosomes, Golgi complex, endoplasmic reticulum, plasma membrane, mitochondria, cytoplasm, lysosomes
Different between prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells
Prokaryotic cells: small cell, cell wall, capsule(slime/mucus), single circular loop of DNA, small 70s ribosomes, plasmids
Eukaryotic cells : large cell, several linear chromosomes, large 80s ribosomes, Golgi complex, DNA inside a nucleus, Endoplasmic reticulum , lysosomes, membrane bound organelles, mitochondria
Both: ribosomes, plasma membrane, cytoplasm, DNA
Cholera
A disease caused by poor sanitation and it is spread in contaminated water
John snow
Identify that cholera is spread through contaminated water and not miasma. In 1857, submitted paper to British medical Journal. Using statistics data to show citizens.
