- Joe visits Pip in London and refers to Pip as ‘air’
- this shows that they are now unfamiliar with each other now that they are out of the comfort of the forge and village
- Joe has recognised that Pip is (and feels) superior to him and they are no longer in the same level
you and me is not two figures to be together in London

- Joe understands that in London, both he and Pipe are different people
- Pip is ashamed of his roots and is standoffish with Joe
- Joe is awkward and out of place
- this feeds into the idea that London is a twisted place and not the haven that it is dreamt to be. It changes people and not for the better

- Joe is self aware that he doesn’t belong anywhere that’s not the places he’s listed
- he’s aware that a pip feels embarrassed of him and that the city changes people

- Joe looks after Pip and pays his debts. describing him as a christian man further emphasises his simple good morals
Joe had paid it, and the receipt was in his name

- Joe pays off Pip’s debts with his heard- earned money which shows how he truly loves and cares for Pip

- this is heartwarming as it shows how forgiving he is
- he still considers Pip his best friend despite Pip’s rejection of him in volume 2

- he steers Pip into accepting people who love him unconditionally compared to Estella and Miss Havisham who toyed with him
