4 Rules of Combat
Cover and Move
Simple
Prioritize and Execute
Decentralized Command
Extreme Ownership
Don’t give up your ability to control things by blaming something or someone else for it.
Figure out what you should have done different, and own it.
Dichotomy of Leadership
Find a balanced center path. Anything will become a problem if taken to the extreme.
Iterative decision making
Don’t wait for perfect information.
Make a small decision quickly and take low risk action quickly. Assess results and repeat.
OODA Loop
Observe
Orient
Decide
Act
Leadership Capital
The amount of influence you have is spent and saved like a bank account.
Every time you make a demand of someone it withdraws from the account.
Every time you let them decide something it adds to the account.
Reciprocity
To earn trust, give trust first.
To earn influence let them influence you.
How to build a relationship
Go first:
Listen
Trust
Respect
Influence
Care
Cover and Move
Teamwork.
Consider how to support others.
Don’t move without making sure you have support.
Simple Plans
Keeping plans simple reduces chance of confusion and keeps everyone focused on the right things.
Prioritize and Execute
If you try and do too much at once then nothing is done as fast or as well as it should be.
Take a breath
Look around
Make a call.
Decentralized command
Communicate commander’s intent.
Set limits so they know when they need to call you.
Trust your men.
The people closest to the problem have the most information about them. Micromanagement slows them down.
Micromanagement trains them to wait to be told what to do.
Use THEIR Plan
Have your team make the plan.
If their plan is viable (even if not optimal) use it. Giving them ownership of the plan gets them committed to making the plan work.
